Richard Neale “Tuff” Hedeman is a four-time world champion bull rider, ProRodeo Hall of Famer, and one of the most influential figures in the history of professional bull riding. Born in El Paso, Texas, Hedeman began competing at a young age and rose through high school and collegiate rodeo before turning professional in 1983. Over the course of his career, he qualified for 12 National Finals Rodeos and captured three PRCA Bull Riding World Championships (1986, 1989, 1991), In 1993, he became the first bull rider to surpass $1 million in career earnings.
Hedeman played a pivotal role in shaping the modern sport as a co-founder of the Professional Bull Riders (PBR), where he later served as president. In 1995, he earned the PBR World Championship, further cementing his legacy as one of the sport’s elite competitors. He is widely remembered for his historic matchups with the legendary bull Bodacious and for his lifelong friendship with fellow champion Lane Frost, whose life was depicted in the feature film8 Seconds. Hedeman’s influence has continued well beyond his competitive career through his leadership roles, including serving as president and ambassador of Championship Bull Riding and founding the Tuff Hedeman Bull Riding Tour, where he continues to produce premier events and support the next generation of athletes.
Today, Hedeman lives outside Stephenville in Morgan Mill, Texas, with his wife, Liz, and two sons, Ryker & Ripp. He is also the proud father of Lane & Trevor — and grandfather to Rocker. He remains deeply connected to the western lifestyle and the sport that defined his career, continuing to serve as one of bull riding’s most respected ambassadors and enduring icons.
